Vale Geoff Pope (Popeye)

4/4/44 to 30/3/04

Ulysses Mallee Mob member

It is with heavy heart and I must admit, a tear in the eye that I write this column, as today is the day we heard of the passing of Popeye after a long and painful illness.

Popeye, or as the vanilla world knew him, Geoff Pope, passed away at 6 am on March 30th, a victim of asbestos related lung cancer. He was a young 59 years of age.

Popeye was a bloody good mate to everyone who knew him, as all his mates will attest. He always had a grin, a good word, or an eightball challenge for all and sundry. He was especially persistent with me coz he knew bloody well that I was not interested in the game.

That's the sort of bloke he was, always full of it.

Popeye and I had quite a few good runs together, with Phillip Island, Mt Mary Pub, in fact points all over the state among them. He loved his bikes, his wife and family, and his club mates, not necessarily in that order.

What can I say, except that I am going to miss his friendly greeting of "Gidday Spook, How ya goin'?" more than I care to admit, and he will remain always in my memory as a bloody fantastic bloke, a good mate, one of nature's gentlemen.

Jen and I on behalf of the Mallee Branch extend to Geoff's wife Wendy and family our sincere condolences and hope that time eases the pain but the memories of a good bloke remain.

I hope you are resting peacefully now Popeye, after so much suffering.

Ride forever, old mate.

Spook, President Ulysses Club Inc Mallee Branch
